5 Days Gorillas and Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

The 5 days Gorillas and chimpanzee trekking safari starts and an ends in Kampala Uganda. This safari includes a gorilla permit of $600 per person and $150 chimpanzee permit per person in the final costing. The safari takes you to two national parks namely; Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park located in south western Uganda for gorilla trekking and Kibale National Park located in western Uganda well known for chimpanzee trekking. Kibale National Park has an altitude of 3,300 meters above the sea level and besides the chimpanzees, it habours other primate species. Each community of chimpanzees has over 100 individuals and each group has got a complicated social structure. Each group has got an adult male and this one is responsible for dominating and defending the group against any incursions by the other male outsiders. The chimpanzees are usually located by listening to their pant hooting calls and then move towards where they are calling from. Just like gorillas, chimpanzee trekkeers are also given one hour to spend with the chimpanzees to observe how they feed, play, care for the young ones and how they jump from tree to another.

Bwindi impenetrable National Park located in southwestern Uganda was opened to tourists in 1993 and it covers an area of 331 sq. meters of lowland forests and montane forests. There are four habituated gorilla groups which include; Mubare, Habinyanja, Rusengura and Nkuringo gorilla group. In addition, the safari park has 10 gorilla families which are open to the tourists on daily basis. Bwindi harbors many animals and plant species including; 348 bird species, 120 mammal species, 220 butterfly species, 27 species of chameleons, frogs, and the geckos, 1000 flowering plants, 104 fern species, 163 species of trees. Some of the bird species include; the turacos and the horn bills. Besides the common Mountain gorillas, the park has many other primates including the chimpanzees and the colobus monkeys.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Kibale national Park

When you arrive at the airport, you will be picked by one of our representatives and be transfered to Kibale Forest National Park your driver / guide upon arrival at Entebbe airport on arrival for your gorilla trekking and chimpanzee safari, and transfer to Kibale forest heading west past Mityana and continue to Fort Portal where you will stop for lunch. Proceed to Kibale forest arriving in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Primate Lodge Kibale.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale forest

After morning breakfast, wake up early to track chimps near Kanyanchu. This can take you half a day. There are primates in the area like the golden monkey, L’Hoest monkey, baboons, white and black colobus monkeys, grey checked mangabey, red colobus, blue monkeys and pottos. Other animals include forest elephants unique from the common type, giant forest hogs and a striking tree species.

Enjoy Lunch and later take a guided nature walk to Bigodi swamp sanctuary, a good site for birders. The Great Blue Turaco and Papyrus Gonolek can easily be marked among the other bird 137 species. There is also an array of butterfly species. Later return for dinner and overnight as above.

Day 3: Bwindi impenetrable national park

you will enjoy morning breakfast and set off for Bwindi forest the home of gorillas driving through Ishasha sector in Queen Elizabeth National park famous for tree climbing lions. Cntinue to Bwindi with lunch en-route arriving in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 4: Mountain gorilla tracking Bwindi

Have early morning breakfast, head to the park office headquarters with packed lunch for a vital briefing prior to trekking the gorillas in the thick impenetrable forests. You get to spend an hour with the gorillas after having trekked for about 5-8 hours.

If you still feel strong just head for a brief nature walk to the local Batwa community. Check out the curio shops, children’s school among others. If you are nature lover, you can try the other option being Munyanja river trail, where you can check out an array of bird life and butterflies. Return for dinner and overnight as above.

Day 5: Back to Kampala

Enjoy morning breakfast and transfer back to Kampala with lunch en-route in Mbarara town. Drop off at Entebbe airport for your flight back home with memories of this gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking trip!

Best Time to Visit

The best wildlife viewing months in Uganda and Rwanda are during the Dry seasons from June to August and December to February. Primate walks in the forest are a big part of any safari in Rwanda. The habitat of rainforests is, by default, very wet, and one can’t avoid rain completely.

How to Obtain Tourist Entry Visa

The most easier way of getting a visa to Uganda is by purchasing it at the entry point, Entebbe Airport or any border station. This is very possible for tourists. All you need to do is pay USD 50, fill in the application form with passport dates and information. The visa fee of USD 50 usually runs for 90 days.
